2026 Black Census Project
2026 Black Census Project
The Black Census Project is the largest survey of Black people in America, a powerful space for Black communities to dream, define, and demand the democracy we rightfully deserve.
Now in its third iteration, the 2026 Black Census Project launches during a period when Black communities face escalating political attacks, economic instability, and systemic erasure. In this moment, Black people across this nation are rising up to build a future that values our humanity and brilliance, while continuing to lead the resistance with vision, setting the course for what freedom must look like for this generation and the next.
This 2026 Black Census Project is a radical invitation to join Black Futures Lab as we stand on business to collect 300,000 responses that will transform collective imagination into actionable data that shapes policy, fuels organizing, and reclaims narrative power.

2023 Black Census Project
For far too long, Black communities have been left out of the conversation – often spoken about, and rarely listened to. But that ends now with the 2023 Black Census Project – the largest survey of Black people in the United States.
We’ve spoken to over 200,000 Black people from across the country about our experiences, concerns, and dreams for the future. The information gathered from the Black Census will be used to identify priority issues for our communities, inform public policy, and shape an agenda created for us, by us.
2018 Black Census Project
In 2018, over 30,000 Black people from across the country took the inaugural Black Census, sharing with us their views, concerns, and dreams for the future. The findings clarified the diversity of issues impacting our communities and revealed real solutions to some of the most pressing challenges.
Check out the findings from the inaugural Black Census Project.
